The caveats in the negotiating framework for Turkey's accession to the EU contain more criteria than the ones set in Copehagen in 1993. The condition that Turkey's accession will depend on the "absorption capacity" of the Union goes well beyond the criteria set in 1993 and clearly indicates the reservations that "Europe" has about Turkey joining the club. Double standards are never a good thing and this is no exception.

Croatia gets EU nod

In a typical Brussels (Strasbourg, Luxembourg) manouvering, after Austria's exerted pressure, Croatia began negotiations for EU membership. It is higlhy likely that Croatia will join the exclusive club much earlier than Turkey, maybe even together with Romania and Bulgaria (although I am doubtful). The next move that I expect to happen is that the EU/US will strenghten their rapprochment policy towards Serbia and delay Croatia's EU accession to a later date allowing Serbia's wounds to heal (losing Kosovo, Montenegro, Croatia's EU membership talks). As for the rest of the Western Balkans, those counreis will have to wait, and will probably enter with Turkey(if that happens at all) as a part of the Ottoman Accession.

Despite ill-timed Austrian efforts to block full membership of Turkey in EU, the EU 25 began membership talks with Turkey yesterday. This is great news not only for the Turks,but also for the Western Balkans countries (especially Macedonia) given the fact that enlargement was to be indefinetelly put off after France's and Holland's rejection of the EU constitution.
It is also positive to see that the EU is not an exclusive Christian club, but a club open to all democratic countries on the European continent (even though Turkey has only 5% of its territory in europe).
Turkey will be able to serve as a bridge between the christian and muslim worlds and be a leading expample of the compatibility of Islam, democracy and secularism.
This is good news for everyone.

Making an innocent (not yet proven guilty) muslim man strip naked, keeping him on a leish and laughing at him is despicable behaviour and should be sanctioned heavily. These were the soldiers that were meant to bring freedom to Iraq.I was disgusted when I heard about it and I am now satisfied that she will have to accont for her illegal behavior. Everything was over in less than 10 min. My beloved SS Lazio fell to the "Milan Forza" in a game that clearly showed a difference in strength, stamina, class... But to have to support a team that is doomed to be defeated repeatedly also takes strenght,stamina and class. So there you have it :)

This sentence was coined after the Rwanda conflict in 1994 to allow the United Nations to intervene when states fail to protect their own citizens, or worse, when states are directly harming their citizens i.e mass murder, genocide, starvation etc..
This sentence bothers me. It means that states now have limited sovereignty.Have we forgotten political theories like "social contract", will now other states enforce "contract obligations" from contracts they are not parties to?
The international obligation to protect the innocent are now used by hyper-puissance leaders like GeorgeW. Bush to enforce democracy that"should" in turn curb starvation, genocide etc. and ultimately stop terrorism.
George Bush's assertions that by forcing democracy onto nations that are traditionally not inclined to tolerate it will eradicate terrorism are fundamentally wrong. Democracy does not eradicate terrorism.
One fact: in 2003, the most populous democracy in the world, India, had 203 terrorist attacks. In the same year, the most populous non-democracy in the world, China, had none.

NATO postpones Macedonia's accession

All the analysts seem to be stuck in the vicious cycle of "we're late with reforms" and don't seem to realise the obvious reason for the postponed entry:
The USA is trying to soothe Serbia. Serbia will be shocked after Montenegro secedes and Kosovo gets its semi-indpendence in the coming year and so Macedonia and Croatia will again have to pay for the serbian nationalist-driven mistakes of the past by not being allowed in the privileged EU-NATO clubs. As much as I hate to admit it, this time it is not the fault of the Macedonian Government. We border a hugely ethnocentric nation on the North (and south and east and west come to think of it) and we have to pay for it. The Balkans are a terrible neigborhood to live in.

It has happened. All the fears emanating from the long held discussions concerning John R. Bolton's appointment to the ambasadorial post in the UN have begun to materialize. In his first month of his tenure, he has begun to attack the proposed reorganization of the United Nations, fearing that it would curb US' ability to intervene "absent of Security Council" authorization". By diminshing the role of the SC, the pillars carrying this organisation would be shaken, rendering it almost defunct. That is exactly what he is attempting to do and if not strongly opposed, his bullish attitude will achieve what has been set out as an unspoken policy by neocons in Washington.

Mr. Robinson's suggestion that Venezuela's president Chavez ought to be killed or "taken out" as he put it,is despicable. Pat Robinson's "rationale" is that President Chavez exports communism and islamic extremism to America's "sphere of influence" and should therefore be assasinated- he has no problem going into foreign countries and "taking out" legitimately elected leaders because they go against American policies (read control of oil). The blatant disrespect for the choice that the Venezuelan people have made makes Mr.Robinson look more communist than Mr. Chavez. Mr. Robinson:it is people like you that export terror to the world.

The process of Israeli pullout from the occupied territories ( defined by UN Security Council Resolution) is a positive step in the Middle East peace process. My hat is off to Israeli PM Sharon for carrying out the process amidst pressure in Israel. Hopefully this unilateral pullout will not stop there and will continue with Israel's (almost) complete withdrawal from the Palestinian territories. Also, the wall that Israel is building closely resembles the Nazi Ghetto walls where Jews were kept. The people kept behind walls,are now building walls. That needs to stop. Only a free Palestinian state can guarantee peace in the region- not walls of exclusion.
